JAMAICA CELEBRATES ONLINE MAY WEDDINGS!

To cheer up couples whose wedding plans went awry due to the pandemic, Jamaica comes up with something special.

It’s been the numero uno Caribbean destination and also listed amongst Best Destinations of the World in 2019. As anywhere else, the virus has dealt a blow to it as well. But their tourism department is not one to just sit back. Jamaica’s been a popular wedding destination for long and they are determined to keep the flag flying.

Virtually, if nothing, in these testing times.

Jamaica decided to celebrate love amidst lockdown in May. It successfully hosted a virtual ceremony for more than 126 couples on 17th May.  The event was a partnership between the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and DestinationWeddings.com

This “virtual wedding’’ ceremony was for some couples who had to cancel or postpone their weddings because of COVID-19.

The ceremony was streamed live, with couples and their guests joining the celebration from their homes using Zoom. The ceremony included live music, scenic shots and the exchange of wedding vows and rings. Couples were able to join the celebration from the comfort and safety of their homes.

Jamaican Tourism Minister Bartlett raised a toast to the wonderful couples, wishing them a life of togetherness, sharing and abundant love’.

“This is undoubtedly the first time that we’re having a virtual wedding here in Jamaica; and, it’s probably the first time anywhere in the world. So, that makes it truly historic,’’ he said.

Bartlett said he looks forward, when travel and airport services to Jamaica resume after being closed down because of the Coronavirus, to welcoming the newlywed couples.

The occasion gave those couples an opportunity to experience a virtual destination wedding. It was something like a chin-up at a time when they are unable to hold their own ceremony.

Other than the fun of an online experience, there was something more in store. For those who plan the real thing there at a later date there was an interesting offer. They could have a destination wedding there when things get better.

There are a number of participating resorts which couples can book even now for a future date. They get 3 free nights extra in an upgraded room category and a host of other freebies and discounts thrown in.

“Jamaica specializes in turning big dreams into romantic realities. Our virtual event was a new twist on this promise. We are excited to have hosted this symbolic virtual wedding. However, we do look forward to welcoming these couples when they visit us for their bona fide celebrations, when the time is right”.
